Alternate picking

Just wanted to know what's the best alternate picking technique, especially for the faster stuff.
Elbow picking is generally looked down upon by most players, because it's apparently not too good for the muscles.
Thumb/finger picking isn't used by too many players, but I've seen some incredibly fast picking done with this technique.
Most players feel wrist picking is the best technique, and that's the most commonly used picking style.
My question is; what do you recommend, and do you have any excercises that can be used to improve alternate picking?

I use a combination of wrist and elbow picking. Does anyone know any famous players that use a similar style?

I'm not completely sure, but it sometimes looks like Rusty Cooley uses a combination of those. He's probably mostly going from the wrist, but his elbow moves quite a bit...
